Economic development is a contact sport

Thursday, September 10, 2020

“Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.” – Dalai Lama

A number of years ago, someone commented to me that “economic development is a contact sport,” by which they meant that success in our work often depends on the network of contacts that we build and how we include those contacts as members of our respective teams.

Today we are restarting monthly office hours with IEDC regional director David Behr, who represents our counterparts at the state-level that provide liaison with other state-level agencies. We are meeting with representatives of seven companies during our time together.

I don’t know whether we will find specific opportunities to support the companies we call on today, which is a reminder that economic development is relational, rather than transactional, and the connections we build are so often seeds we are planting for the future.
