The extra mile

“There’s no traffic jam on the extra mile.” – Roger Staubach

It seems a bit heavy to refer to this month as the ‘final mile,’ because it’s such a beautiful and important season as we wrap up 2019 and look to the year ahead. So how about ‘the extra mile’ as we build on our successes from this year and prepare for opportunities ahead? Let me share two pieces of advice I have come across that illustrate how to go the extra mile this month.

First, from Essentialism author Greg McKeown: “… sometime this (month) block out an hour or two (or 30 minutes) and really think about the one thing, professionally, that will take you to the next level. Look for the game-changer. Make sure it feels right as well. Then build a plan based on trade-offs, where you eliminate or reduce other activities. You will be happier for this clarity. You will feel a reduction in stress. You will feel the peace that comes from working on the right priority.”

Next, from The Excellence Dividend author Tom Peters: “This is NOT a suggestion. This is an ORDER. CALL (emails are VERBOTEN) 50 people (not 49) between now and noon on 12/31 and thank them for their support in 2019. (The “ROI” borders on infinite.”) (I started this in 1973.).”

We all have lots to do as business and community leaders, not to mention this time of year as we make extra time for family and friends. Neither of these activities requires a significant investment of time and effort, yet both can generate clarity, display gratitude, and build initiative as we continue to invest in ourselves, our teams, and our communities.

Next week as we will convene business and community leaders for our final Executive Roundtable luncheon of the year. The event also serves as our 2019 Annual Meeting. We will celebrate all things economic development momentum heading into the new year (and new decade!). Learn more and RSVP at the link HERE.
